The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are angular (kendra) houses - they are the pillars of the chart: self, home, marriage and career. The 1st, 5th and 9th are trinal (trikona) houses - the most auspicious, ruling self, intelligence and fortune.
1st self and body, 2nd wealth and speech, 3rd courage and siblings, 4th home and mother, 5th children and creativity, 6th health and enemies, 7th marriage and partnership, 8th longevity and transformation, 9th fortune and dharma, 10th career and status, 11th gains and networks, 12th expenses and liberation.
Each house has a lord - the planet ruling its sign. The condition of a house lord decides the results of that house. For example, a strong 10th lord gives a successful career, while a weak one needs strengthening.
