Vedic Astrology Basics

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the ancient Indian science of planetary influence on human life. It reads the positions of planets at the moment of your birth to understand your personality, tendencies and life path.

What is a Kundli (Birth Chart)?

A kundli is a snapshot of the sky at your birth. It is divided into 12 houses, each representing an area of life - self, wealth, siblings, family, children, health, marriage, career and more. The planets sit in these houses and signs, creating a unique map of your life.

The 9 Planets (Grahas)

Vedic astrology uses 9 grahas - Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu and Ketu. Each planet rules specific qualities: Sun rules authority, Moon rules mind, Mars rules courage, Venus rules love and Saturn rules discipline.

Rashis and Nakshatras

The zodiac has 12 rashis (signs) - Aries to Pisces - and 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions). Your Moon sign and birth nakshatra are especially important in Vedic astrology because the Moon governs the mind and emotions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?
Yes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac based on actual star positions, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac based on seasons. This makes the same birth date fall under different signs in the two systems.
What do I need to read my kundli?
You need your date, time and place of birth. The exact birth time matters most for the ascendant (Lagna) and house positions.
