Why is it Celebrated?
Maha Shivratri marks the divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati, and also the night Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance). It falls on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun (Feb-Mar).

Rituals
Devotees fast through the day, perform abhishek (ritual bathing of the linga) with milk, water, honey and bel leaves, chant "Om Namah Shivaya" and stay awake through the night in vigil.
Significance
The night represents overcoming darkness and ignorance. It is believed that sincere worship on this night brings liberation (moksha) and fulfills desires.
