Choghadiya Muhurat

Choghadiya is a traditional method of dividing the day into auspicious and inauspicious time slots. The day is split into 8 parts and the night into 8 parts, each ruled by a planet. These periods are labelled Shubh (good), Labh (gain), Amrit (nectar), Char (neutral) or the inauspicious Rog, Kaal and Udveg.

Merchants and families across India use Choghadiya to quickly find a favourable time to start a journey, open a shop or begin any important work without detailed astrological calculation.

The name comes from 'choghadia', meaning a group of four 'ghadi' (a traditional unit of roughly 24 minutes). Eight choghadiyas make up the day, and eight make up the night.

The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal parts, each about 90 minutes long. Each part is assigned a choghadiya name in a fixed sequence based on the weekday. The night from sunset to sunrise is divided the same way.

The sequence starts with the ruling planet of the day and rotates through seven planets: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. Each planet corresponds to a specific choghadiya label - some auspicious and some inauspicious.
