Rahu Kaal, also called Rahu Kalam, is a period of about 90 minutes each day that is ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. In Vedic astrology this window is considered inauspicious for starting anything new - a business, a journey, a deal or an important purchase.

The concept of Rahu Kaal comes from the ancient story of Rahu, a demon who disguised himself to drink the nectar of immortality during the churning of the ocean. When discovered, his head was cut off, but the nectar had already made his head immortal. That immortal head became the shadow planet Rahu.

Because of this origin, Rahu is associated with deception and obstacles. The period ruled by Rahu each day is therefore considered unfavourable for honest new beginnings and important commitments.
